Pittsburgh City Council votes to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana

By a vote of 7-2, Pittsburgh City Council passed a measure to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana this morning.

The bill allows city police to fine up to $100 for possessing less than 30 grams of marijuana, or 8 grams of hashish, instead of citing them for a misdemeanor. Its sponsor, Public Safety Committee chair Daniel Lavelle, previously said the measure was intended to “help break the damning life-long consequences of unemployment, lack of education, and being caught in a revolving criminal justice system.”

Mexico grants first marijuana permits for growing and possession

The court ruled that growing and consuming marijuana is covered under the right of ‘free development of personality’, but won’t allow sales of the drug. The Mexican government has granted the first permits allowing for growing and possession of marijuana for personal use. The government’s medical protection agency said the permits will apply only to the four plaintiffs who won a November supreme court ruling.

Oregon To Begin Recreational Marijuana Sales Early

Oregon adults will be able to legally purchase recreational marijuana beginning Oct. 1, about a year earlier than had been expected.

Gov. Kate Brown (D) signed a law on Tuesday allowing the sale of recreational marijuana in existing medical marijuana dispensaries, starting just three months after Oregon’s reformed marijuana law went into effect.
